2006 Tamayo Family Vineyards Red Wine Contra Costa County

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

tamayo-red.jpgJeff and Sara Tamayo own and operate this small winery in Contra Costa County where the estate vineyards overlook the majestic Diablo Range. While they produce wines from their Napa vineyard and several other appellations throughout the state, I was most intrigued by this red blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Carmenere, Alicante Bouschet and the Portuguese Tinta Cao. The 2006 Tamayo Family Vineyards Red Wine Contra Costa County, $15, www.tamayofamilyvineyards.com, has Crozes-Hermitage like notes of white flowers, cherry preserves, baking spices, green, pink and black peppercorns, fruit cake, and brush and scrub like the garrigue of Provence. It is medium-bodied with pretty berry fruit and floral notes and a light touch of oak.
